Today is Trinity Sunday.
It is the day when vicars across the country try and explain how we can worship one God who is 3 persons, but is just one God. An idea known as The Trinity. We heard some of the last words of Jesus on earth this morning in our gospel reading. He told us to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. These are the 3 persons of the Trinity, the 3 persons of God.
So to explain the trinity, we might try to use an example like this….
Here is an egg. It is made up of the shell, the white and a yolk. 3 parts but just one egg.
Or maybe this one, even tastier than an egg..
Here is a jaffa cake. It is made up of chocolate, orange jelly and a cake. True perfection.
But both of these have the problem that they are made up of 3 different things. Each person of God is made of the same ‘substance’.
So then we try I am Rebecca, I am a mum, a daughter, and a sister. Now I have the same substance, but I’m only one person, not three distinct people.
So each of these examples can give us a tiny glimpse into what God as Trinity is, but they can’t really help us to understand what God is really like. Because God is unique and as our bible reading from Isaiah said “No one can fathom or understand God”. That is part of what makes him God.
I asked the congregation if they could give some ideas of how they think about God, and here are some of the responses I got. I see God in creation. God is love. I think of God in heaven watching us. God is the Trinity
God is made up of 3 persons. These are God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
God the Father created the world, as someone said “I see God in creation”.
God the Son, Jesus. God on earth. The bible tells us that if we know what Jesus is like, which we can find out from reading the bible stories about him, then we can know what God the Father is like.
We can see that Jesus has compassion – he heals people when they are sick, he feeds them when they are hungry.
He loves children – he blesses them when the disciples would rather send them away.
He stands up for what is right – he threw the traders who were cheating the people out of the Temple.
He has a control over creation – he stilled storms and could walk on water
He forgives peoples’ sins.
He has friends and forms relationships
He takes time to pray and spend time alone with God the Father
He was willing to give up his life so we could gave a relationship with God the Father too.
This is the God who I know and worship. A God who if we love and follow his instructions, then we can make the world a better place.
But we don’t have to do it by ourselves. This isn’t about us trying to make ourselves good enough. There is still the third part of the Trinity. God the Holy Spirit. Jesus told his followers that when he went back to heaven he would give them his Spirit to help them. God sends his Spirit now, when we choose to become his followers. It is his Spirit that helps us to become more like Jesus in our everyday lives.
The 3 persons of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, work together in perfect unity. We may never really understand how God can be one God but three persons, but we do know that it is through their relationship with one another that we can have a relationship with God.
So the next time you eat an egg or a jaffa cake, pause and wonder, about what God means to you, and how you relate to him. Think about how his Spirit in you can make you more like Jesus, and bring you closer to God the Father.
